‘Silent Angels’ is a term known for children with Rett syndrome which is a debilitating genetic disorder, the second most common form of severe intellectual disability in females.
Children with this disorder develop normally for the first 6 months. After that, their development stops and starts to decline. Patients lose their speech, their ability to crawl or walk and their ability to control hand movements. They also demonstrate a slowed brain and head growth and autistic-like behaviour. Many suffer from seizures and autonomic irregularities with the latter being the major cause of death. Affected individuals need lifelong support and will never be able to live independently.
The care required for a young woman with Rett syndrome is comparable to that required for a high-level quadriplegic.
